Expertise in the refurbishment of old systems

The MIL-STD-461, respectively IEC 61000-4-25 and AECTP 500, is applicable to equipment or subsystems located outside a shielded facility. The RS105 test method describes a transient electromagnetic pulse of up to 50 kV/m (-0dB, +6dB), double exponential waveform with a rise time in the nanosecond range. It is applied to the equipment under test (EUT) at least 5 times. The EUT should not exhibit any signs of performance degradation

Montena can supply a PCI generator tailored to your needs, and provide you with a turnkey solution. This includes coupling and decoupling networks, current injection and measuring probes, fiber optic links, etc. A PC software application drives all the instruments for a simple and effective operation.

FAQ

What is the purpose of Montena’s Mobile Indoor/Outdoor NEMP test systems?

These transportable systems are designed to assess the electromagnetic immunity of electronic equipment and subsystems to a nuclear electromagnetic pulse (NEMP), in accordance with MIL-STD-461 RS105 (editions E, F,G and H), IEC 61000-4-25, and AECTP 500. They are applicable to equipment or subsystems located outside a shielded facility.

How does the system generate the test electromagnetic field?

A Marx generator with an adjustable peaking circuit (or a direct discharge configuration for smaller models) produces a high voltage pulse that propagates along a bounded wave radiating line mounted over a conductive ground plane. The electromagnetic field generated beneath the line is vertically polarized, with a peak electric field strength of at least 50 kV/m at full charging voltage. The pulse waveform is a double exponential with a rise time of 2.3 ns ± 0.5 ns (10–90%) and a duration of 23 ns ± 5 ns (50–50%), operating in TEM mode.

What sizes are available, and how do they differ?

The range covers five system heights to accommodate different equipment under test (EUT) sizes and test environments. All models deliver a peak electric field of ≥ 50 kV/m, with a pulse rise time of 2.3 ns ± 0.5 ns and a duration of 23 ns ± 5 ns. The NEMP050 is intended for small items such as printed circuit boards and small subsystems, with a maximum EUT height of 17 cm. Larger models accommodate full equipment racks and subsystems in semi-anechoic chambers or outdoor setups.

Can these systems be used both indoors and outdoors?

Yes. All systems are designed for easy assembly and disassembly. Indoor deployment is ideally carried out in a semi-anechoic chamber; outdoor use is possible in suitable weather conditions. A temporary ground plane consisting of a special metallic mesh and related assembly material is available as an accessory for outdoor installations.

How is the test controlled and automated?

The system is controlled via software through fibre optic links, ensuring galvanic isolation between the high-voltage test environment and the measurement/control equipment. The NEMP050 additionally supports RS232 and USB interfaces. Automated test sequencing and report generation are included across the entire range.

What measurement accessories are available?

A complete range of accessories is available, including D-dot sensors (SFE3-5G, SGE3-5G) for electric field measurement, B-dot sensors (SFM2G, SGM2G) for magnetic field measurement, baluns (BL3-5G) for free-field sensors, shielded fibre optic links (MOL2000T2 or MOL3000), shielded oscilloscope enclosures (SB3G), and the PULSELab pulse measurement and processing software (lifetime licence for one PC). Field sensor mounting kits, dielectric masts, and coaxial cables are also available.

What are the power supply requirements?

All systems operate on a standard single-phase AC supply: 90–264 Vac, 47–63 Hz. Power consumption is below 70 VA for the larger systems (NEMP140, NEMP360, NEMP500, NEMP730), and 150 VA for the NEMP050.
